Captain Hector Lopez and his family are from Kingsville, Texas and worked on the famed King Ranch for generations. They are locally known for what the King Ranch named their cowboys, “Los Kinenos”” – King’s people. Hector is a 5th generation Kineno.
In his youth, Hector moved all around the world during his Father’s military career and upon Dad’s retirement, arrived back in Kingsville in 1978 with a vintage 1972 green and white Chevrolet Cheyenne Super 10 pick up truck from Fort Knox Kentucky. This is when his passion for fishing Baffin Bay began.
The early years on Baffin were spent bow fishing with his brother and friends for sheepshead and gar with an old Ben Pearson recurve bow. This is where he fell in love with wading the flats of Baffin Bay taking home long stringers of sheepshead and then fishing for red and trout under the lights at night.
After college, and an extensive fishing curriculum at Texas A&I, Hector pulled a 5 year hitch in the Army and attained the rank of Captain. After honorably serving in the great deserts of the world, he decided to try his hand at a business career. Most of this time was spent as a consumer and investment banker in Chicago, Dallas, Austin, and San Antonio.
Although Hector lived away from Baffin Bay for nearly 35 years, he spent almost every spring break, Summer vacation, Thanksgiving, and Christmas in Kingsville either hunting South Texas or fishing Baffin Bay.
In 1993, while living in Austin, Captain Lopez bought his first fly rod in Gruene, Texas and fished the San Marcos and Guadalupe Rivers for trout and panfish. This led to fishing the flats on Baffin and after hooking his first red on the fly, he was hooked for life!
Over his 40 years of fishing Baffin, Captain Lopez has had a few boats along the way starting with a NewCanoe, to a Flatstalker, to a 13′ Venganza Microskiff. and finally to a Technical poling skiff built by Tim Clancey of New Water Boatworks better known as a “Stilt”.
Although sight casting with light tackle is always welcome, Captain Lopez’ fishing passion on Baffin is guiding new, or skilled fly fishing enthusiasts, slowly and methodically along Baffin’s vast extreme shallow shorelines and back lakes.
